Present State of Asian Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) Stocks
نویسنده
چکیده
Data from pelagic trawl surveys by TINRO-center from 1987 to 1996 in the Okhotsk Sea indicate that coho abundance is underestimated by coastal observations. The approximate Asian coho spawning biomass is 7,300-16,000 tons for the 1990s. Ways of improving Asian coho salmon resource management are discussed. Collection of precise fishery and escapement statistics must be expanded in areas previously considered as non-traditional for coho. More attention must be paid to protection of coho spawning grounds from illegal fishing. Spawning stock abundance estimates must be substantiated by marine survey results. If Asian coho reproduction can be successful throughout the area around the Russian Far East, an artificial rearing program is highly recommended, which would not likely be detrimental to wild populations.

Anthropogenic effects on watersheds are important in explaining the decline of Pacific Northwest salmon stocks. Associations were tested between thirteen anthropogenic variables in 202 watersheds in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and California and the stock status of summer, spring and fall Chinook Onchorhynchus tshawytsha, coho O. kisutch, and winter steelhead O. mykiss. Summer Chinook had the hig...

A coho salmon Oncorhynchus kjsutch (Walbaum) was found to develop lesions associated with so called X-cells propagating in the liver parenchyma. The ultrastructural features, insufficient to determine the origin of X-cells, corresponded to those found in pseudobranchial tumours of Atlantic cod by Watermann & Dethlefsen (Helgolander Meeresunters. 35: 231-242, 1982).

Thyroid tissues in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) goiters showed marked regional variation in structure and ultrastructure. For the most part the follicles were small, were composed of tall epithelial cells, and contained little or no colloid material. The follicle epithelial cells were essentially similar in fine structure to hyperactive thyroids in mammals and one type of follicle in cong...
